The skin is the outer most covering of the &quot;body pot&quot;. It forms the chief interface between the internal and external enviroment. It is a sense organ of air element in the body. The skin as a sense organ brings in information from the external enviroment. This knowledge from the skin alters the workings of the internal organs of the body, so as to maintain the internal environment constant.<br />
 <br />

1. The superficial--Epidermis 2. The deeper-Dermis<br />
 <br />
1. The Epidermis is the protective response of the skin to the rays of sun. It also response to the stress from body and mind. The skin's color changes according to the above factors. <br />
 <br />
2. The Dermis,<br />
 <br />
The Dermis is the essential sense organ of which is rich in blood vessels, lymphatics and nerves.<br />
 <br />
The skin is bound to the underlying structures of bones and muscles. The stretching of the skin with the muscle action activates the skin from within. Activation from within means that the sensory nerve endings in the skin get stimulated. This impulses evokes parasympathic vasodilator response of the vascular bed of the body. Any exercise or asanas without stimulation in the skin can only bring obout the sympathetic nerve response so as to raise the blood pressure and quicken the pulse . It is essential to stimulate the skin in order to give balance to both sympathetic and parasymthetic response to body. <br />
 <br />
The skin is richly supplied with nerves. Many of these nerve erminals have special receptors like touch receptors, pressure receptors,vibration receptors and thermal receptors. These skin receptors can get stimulated by outside agencies as well as from within. During Asana- Pranayama these receptors ger activated from within. <br />
 <br />
In Iyengar practice, the weighs and bandages are used to relax the muscles. The possible explanation for this is that the steady stimulation of the pressure recptors helps to reduce the tone of the muscle. the weight pressure removes the build-in muscle tension, and the muscle submits to the force of gravity and relaxed.<br />
 <br />
It must be remembered that during Asana and Pranayama practice, not only the outer skin gets activated but the nerves if the inner linning of the body cavities also get activated and send impulses to spinal cord brain centres. The whole object of doing asana and pranayama is to work on nerves system of the body to improve its receptivity , and to control abd expand its reactivity.</div>

<br />
Just wanted to quickly introduce myself. I've been lurking these forums for a couple of months now and thought the time was ripe to join in the fun :p.<br />
<br />
I have a background in western philosophy as well as religious studies (specializing in 'mysticism'). About six years ago, I took a year-and-a-half long yoga teacher training course and subsequently taught classes for about two years. After a break from teaching, I will start a more in-depth (600 hours+) course starting this weekend. <br />
<br />
Very passionate about the yoga tradition in all its facets and looking forward to participating in what seems to be a lively and diverse community here...<br />

It's my first sort of intensive hata yoga course and I lost 15 pounds in the first 8 days! More than that I saw a bunch of people in the class levitate in the first few days of the program! Pretty amazing - my first direct experience with some of the Siddi powers. Thought this group might find it interesting. Here are some videos from the program. <br />

I've been a runner and devoted gym person for about 8 years.  Recently I've been experiencing a lot of pain/tightness/soreness in my hips/legs and one day I woke up and realized that I needed to get into a yoga class.  There's a reputable hot yoga studio near my home and I was hooked after the first class.<br />
<br />
In tonight's class, I got lightheaded and almost nauseous for the first time in class, about 3/4 of the way through.  I had to miss a couple poses while I rested in child's pose and didn't feel all better until I got home, rehydrated, took some rolaids, and curled up on the couch.<br />
<br />
What I'm struggling with is beating myself up for &quot;missing&quot; poses.  The runner/gym person in me is having trouble letting go of that competitiveness.    <br />
<br />
I also think one of the reasons I didn't feel well tonight was that I did some tough runs and gym workouts this weekend, and one earlier today.  I'm afraid to ease up on my old routine for fear I'll lose my fitness, which I know is ridiculous.    I guess this is just part of my practice?   Practicing letting go of the &quot;shoulds?&quot;<br />

I am a newb to this board and a bit of a newb to yoga. I took a yoga class in February because I thought it would help me relax- had (and still do) have some serious stressors in my life and wanted to learn how to be more bendy.<br />
<br />
Months later and I am still at it. Depending on my work schedule, I try to fit in 4 practices at the studio per week. I love yoga. Although I still have the stressors in my life that drove me to seek out ways of relaxing, I have found yoga to help me in other areas of my life as well. I am also still working on the bendy part ;).<br />
<br />
Here are some tidbits about me:<br />
I work with kids.<br />
I have a kid.<br />
I love animals and do not eat them.<br />
I enjoy being outdoors.<br />
I still listen to heavy metal even though I am almost 40. \m/ Rock on! <br />
When I bake it is usually for my dogs.<br />
Sometimes I protest with the PETA folks.<br />
I love reading books about Zombies.<br />
Volunteering in disaster areas is my hobby. (profile pic was me working demolition Summer 2010 in Leogane, Haiti)<br />
I randomly quote lines from the movie Fight Club or Zombieland.<br />
I lack a filter.<br />
And sometimes I forget that I am a grown up.<br />

<br />
I hope I get to know some of you and we can all learn from each other.<br />
