Yes.
Just in case you wanted something more specific than the advice of gartxott, however, here are my thoughts... Find a good teacher if you have never practiced yoga before. You can join a class, depending on your goals and personality (and finances!), but practicing yoga in a group is not for everybody. Be patient with yourself as you begin. Practice a little every day. As you begin to observe changes in your body and mind, you will never want to stop practicing yoga! I have never heard of your mat, but I am sure it is fine. The best thing about yoga is that you don't need to buy ANYTHING to practice it. You just need you. Yes, you will become more toned (as gartxott said, in mind and body). You will also become more flexible-- mentally and physically. I am excited for you that you have the courage to start doing something that you have always been interested in. Let us know whether you've joined a class or found a teacher, or how you plan to begin!

Hi Tess,
The best yoga for body toning is without doubt Hatha Yoga. Start with easy asanas (poses), do not overstrain. You can practice everyday but remember to respect your body (violence against oneself is also violence). In the case you found a skilled teacher, ask him/her for the convenience of also practicing pranayama (breath exercises). Glad you did the good choice. Good luck! |

Hi Tess
In this respect i couldn't answer you. There are of many types... and also remember that you are british and i'm spanish, countries with different economic environments. There are good books and videos, as Vishnudevananda's Book of Yoga, but it's much better learning from a teacher. Be keen with your choice is the best advice i can give you. Regards. |

Hey Tess, I just joined this forum today and came across your post. Have you had any luck finding a Yoga class yet? I've been to a few different teachers in my area and found that each one provides a truly unique experience. Right now my favorite happens to be a style called Gaia Flow. My teacher is amazing and my practice has really helped me to transfrom so many aspects of my life-- namely, to quit smoking ciggarettes for four months now! I hope you've been able to begin pursuing your Yoga practice! love, pH |
