I'm Having Problems with Jala Neti

I''ve been practicing jala neti for a couple of months now with generally good results. I Took a plane flight for the first time since doing nasal irrigation. I've flown many times and do not have problems with ear pain, but I did on this most recent flight. Upon descent, I felt increasing discomfort in my right ear and in the area arount the mastoid. Once on the ground I had a large amount of clear drainage that actually felt good, like my head was clearing. Is it possible that I am allowing the saline to flow too deeply during irrigation?
Can the saline make it to the frontal or mastoid sinuses, and if it does, can it get trapped there?
