Pain in Padmasana

I’ve been practising yogasanas for a number of years and never really had a problem.

I am quite flexible, I can put my legs behind my head without a problem.

However last year I made Baddha Padmasana (Lotus position where you cross your arms behind your back and catch the toes and push out your chest) without having first warmed up. Since then I have some pain in my right-knee.

The pain only comes when (usually after) I go into Padmasana but now even sitting in Sukhasana, I can feel the pain. It is not bad pain and I have no pain at all standing or walking or sitting in Vajrasana, and no pain in any other asanas which do not involve the crossing of legs.

I do not know exactly what went wrong or how I can correct it. One yoga teacher told me that it can’t be very damaged because I would feel pain when I walked. She suggested that my knees were out of alignment.

She rolled up a yoga mat and tied my legs together with some belts then put some sand bags on top and I lay on my back for some time. This did seem to help.

My yoga teacher in India made a herbal paste and applied it on my knee overnight. This certainly seemed to help. But the pain returned after I got in Padmasana again.

Obviously I will not push myself or try to go back in padmasana (even though I can) to prevent permanent damage.

I would like to know what exactly is going wrong - it doesn’t seem that my hips are inflexible (if I can put my legs behind my head!).

Also which Asanas should i practise to remedy and to support this knee?

Thanks in Advance!

Knee cranks.

Knee circles.

then put the legs out in front . . . raise leg a little to bend the knee to get anything lined back up thats out of place.

Half Lotus.

Taylors/cobblers/butterfly.

If your stuff in the knee isn’t loose or warmed up. and you just throw you legs into the lotus you can jack your knees up.

meniscus . . . acl . . . mcl . . .

To support healing process read the ZO MANIK thread about her knee in the community forum.

whatever it is - I would just rest it… I used to have a pain in the inner side of my knee…padmasana… or pashimotanassana… It is gone now

Rest really works
