Swimming tends to strengthen the front of the body, increasing internal rotation of the shoulder. Strengthening the muscles of external rotation and shoulder stabilization are likely candidates for you, although this cannot be confirmed by your brief comments. An in person structural analysis by a good yoga therapist would be helpful.

Assuming that you do have increased internal rotation, I would recommend poses which open the anterior shoulder girdle, stretching the muscles of the chest, and poses which strengthen the thoracic (upper back muscles) providing stability for the shoulder blades and bringing them back and down.

Bridge pose - both supported Bridge for a passive stretch and Active Bridge for stretching and strengthening.

Cobra pose - especially done in a modified version which focuses on upper back extension.

Hope this is helpful.

John,

There are various stretching exercises and single joint movements from Mukunda's Joint Freeing Series which would be helpful to restore free movement, but these are best shown in person. Where are you located? Perhaps we can get you connected with someone who can help you in person.

Would love to drop by for a private session! Meanwhile - will have to hold to on line contact! Gentle pain free range of motion isolating neck from shoulder movements, and cobra, bridge as suggested is best we can do from here.

Best to you,
Namaste,
Chandra

Yoga In Daily Life. I'm not sure if they have a center in Serbia and Montenegro, but they do have in Croatia. The website is:

http://www.yoga-in-daily-life.hr/

Perhaps they can put you in touch with an instructor in your area.

Uh how about more thoroughly illustrating your issue as the second poster had alluded to?

Yes John,
You said "shoulder pain". But not much else. Shoulder pain of what sort, located wher relative to the shoulder joint itself? Continuous pain? Pain that's getting better or worse? This ha sbeen examined by an M.D.?
When do you find relief from the pain in question?

You simply want to strengthen your shoulder muscles? Therefore you're asking about strengthening the deltoids? Or is your question more complex?

What sort of asana practice do you have now?
