Hi All
I recently read an article which said the practicing trataka, would give siddhis like clairvoyance. Do you think is it possible to attain siddhis thro in this kali yuga?. I know we should not practice yoga with siddhis as objective. Has anybody had influence of siddhis in their life?

The Meaning of Siddhis
My very limited personal experience makes their existance a ceirtanty. The problem is that until we are egoistic and selfish (as we all are, just that we think it is normal) even unvoluntary use of these siddhis produce extremely unpleasant sideeffects. Before every step on the spiritual journey, three steps must be taken in morality ... and this is not an arbitrary rule. Noone is given a firearm before learning how to handle it safely, for his/her own as well as other's sake.he article given, siddhi is explained PS. In the given article, siddhi is defined as "accomplishing a task, perfecting soemthing". In light of this, any action, any job done well is a siddhi. Miracles happen evey single day, in your own life. We take too much for granted ... Last edited by Hubert; 11-27-2007 at 12:14 PM. |

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. I cannot say if practicing trataka will give you siddhis, but what I can say if you are naturally more sensitive and certain centres are more open, it will be enhanced by all the different yoga practices of which trataka is but one.

Yes siddhis are a certanty like hubert wrote and they are explained in the third chapter of the Yoga sutras of Patanjali.
But if we run after them it`s definetly the wrong way. If we realise they are there ang become proud of them everthing is lost. They are no more than a signpost to be on the rigth way and can become a big hinderance if we give themn to much importance. All the best Lars |

May be the positive point about siddhi, what i believe is it will attract many people to spiritual path. But i also accept the fact, it will delay the progress. But it will attract many people to yoga. Once they are attracted, continious practice of meditation, pranayama and other yogic exercise would make them realize that siddhi are only distractions.
Just my opinion.

Their experience transforms a nonbeliever witness into a believer, and a believer who experiences them, into a seer.

The big question is, why do you want to atract many people to Yoga?
To be proud of what you reached? Lars |

Why shouldn't I?..... Whats wrong in expecting others to have the same happiness which i get from Yoga..................
We shouldnt be selfish and I thought Siddhi would help in attracting people to yoga

There is the risk of misunderstanding or prejudice if one learns too much, too soon. Even admitting you believe in siddhis, paranormal, or spiritual things might prove a turn off for a lot of people. This way one just makes them more rooted in their own conviction ... what you say must be always based on who you talk to. A selfless action or a kind word are things what does not require miraculous powers, but their effect is miraculous nevertheless.

Hi Amateuryogi,
While posting another thread this morning on charity I discovered the following words from Swami Sivananda and they indeed would add to the understanding of this post "Spiritual progress is not measured by Siddhis, or powers, but only by the depth of your bliss in meditation. " - Swami Sivananda
