Hello everyone.
I wonder if you can give me a few pointers. Im a big tall bloke with a bit of a belly developing. Im 29 years old, 6'5 and my back is stiff as a board and gives me a few problems mainly in the lower area and im not as quick on my feet as i should be. Im thinking yoga may be a way to help me out, will it be able to get me a bit more supple and help my back problems. many thanks. |

Welcome to the forum. You remind me a lot about myself, I was also 29 when I started yoga with a big belly, but not as tall as you. I am not sure what pointers you want, but I will tell you what I think you want to hear: About the big belly - this is most probably the source of your back problems as well and I can assure you yoga alone is not going to solve it for you. Yoga as weight loss is a general misconception that is perpetuated by irresponsible yoga teachers who advocate yoga as a such. Yoga alone won't help as it is not very aerobic in nature, with the exception of a few styles. You need to look at you whole lifestyle holistically and make the changes in diet and in lifestyle in general to get rid of that developing belly. A big belly (apart from eating too much and incorrectly) is an indication of a loss of muscle tone around the back and stomach which should carry all that weight you added around the belly, but which is not there, so the pull on the spine increases and the weak back muscles are bearing all the brunt as they are trying to support the spine. In this case yoga can help to develop over time these muscles and strenghten them again, but you'll need to do the other work to lose weight, i.e adding aerobic exercises like swimming, walking etc to your programme and also looking at your diet. About flexibility - Yes, in time and if you also start to change your lifestyle yoga can add flexibility and help you with the toning of your muscles, but this usually don't happen overnight. Yoga is a slow and deliberate process, question is do you have the patience to persist? Hope these are the pointers you are looking for, you give us so little about yourself that we can only guess.

Hi guys.
Thanks for your replys. Yes it all makes sense what you are telling me there. My stomach is not HUGE but feel it is not helping me. I used to eat loads of crap but have cut that out over the past few months and try to go on a couple of good long walks every week. I also do a very manual job, lots of lifting and carrying. Im not expecting any over night results... who does, but would like to persevere. Many thanks again. |
