Dear Mukunda,

I have slight cervical spondylosis, which as per doctor is not very serious. I also feel pain in my lower back if I sit for about 15 minutes in a normal chair. However, I don’t feel pain even if I sit for long in my office chair.

When I came to know that Sirshasana, Sarvangasana, Paschimottasana & Halasana are not good for the above-mentioned problems, I have completely stopped doing them. I also used to do Trikonasana, Supta Vajrasana, Chakrasana, Paschimottasana, Matsyasana & Mayurasana. About six months ago when I approached a Yoga therapist for my cervical spondylosis and lower back pain, he trained me for 20 days in various yogic exercises which I am doing. However, he has told me to stop Trikonasana, Supta Vajrasana, Chakrasana, Matsyasana & Mayurasana. I love to do these asanas as they keep me physically very fit and my stomach flat, hence started to do them again. Do you think my problems will become worse if I continue doing these postures, which the therapist told me to stop?

Thank you,

One point of view is that the therapist has indeed given you good advice for the basic way of practicing asanas. The poses that are recommended you drop are correct in that view. However, Many of these poses could be modified by a certified Structural Yoga Therapist (SYT) to be beneficial to you. You would need personalized attention and more detail than i can give in this forum. go to my website for a SYT graduate in your area to help you. They would also encourage you to do modified Mayurasana, agnisar dhouti, and Uddiyana Bandha, which can help. namaste mukunda
