Restless leg syndrome is a Vata derangement...the elderly are in a Vata time of life. Warm, moist, oily food is advised. Also, warm sesame oil massage on the feet and legs in the evening before bed. The rejuvenation almond drink found in Amadea Morningstar's Ayurvedic Cook Book is a good rasayana (rejuvenative) and the warm milk and spices that are in it is Yummmmy for the Tummmy and very calming. Adding a little Brahmi to the warm milk is also soothing and relaxing (one half to one teaspoon depending on the person's age and Prakruti).
From Pat of RMIYA staff in Boulder, CO. I would also encourage gentle regular walking done with pranayama to help ground the person. This is done with inhaling as you take one step and exhaling on the opposite leg. Mukunda |

Pat is a colleague on the staff of RMIYA (Rocky Mountain Institute of Yoga and Ayurveda - www.earthnet.net/rmiya) I find her experience with yoga and Ayurveda to be most beneficial especially in questions of Ayurvedic herbal treatments. She can be reached in Denver, CO. via email at padmashakt@aol.com for more inquiries. Mukunda
