Hello Luke and All,
Just to be clear, the Mulabandh does NOT cause constipation, if this is occuring, there are other factors contributing to constipation. As Pandara offers, fiber should make quick work of this if this is a simple health matter. If this is a chronic issue you for you, have you spoken to your doctor? Luke, please use care when posting at the forum to say that the "mulabandh leads to constipation for me" because there many new-to-Yoga readers who will mistake this for a general concern or contraindication for all. Have you begun working with a well-trained teacher yet? I remember that your past attempts at the Ashmini Mudra also caused you health problems when you were trying to teach yourself these powerful practices. Please, please use care around these practices and only do them after you have been trained by someone who is authorized to teach them; even then, you should be in a sattvic partnership with these person to give you benefits. Kind regards,

Thanks Nichole for posting the very reply I would post.
Therefore my reply is this: Whatever you are doing that is causing you constipation, stop doing it. I don't know what it is but it is highly unlikely it falls under the light of yoga. There is no point for a neophyte to be doing mudras in the first place. Without foundation it is complete lunacy. And there is no yoga to lunacy, despite some of the asana classes offered here in the U.S. that might lead one to believe otherwise. When someone posts a yoga question and they do so without a context, nine times out of ten they are not interested in a sound reply. And so they are not really engaging the requisite relationship with the board community. Instead they are looking for a quick hit, an easy answer, a microwave to their crisis of the day. Living in a desert is too hot...move. Fast food leads to obesity...stop eating it. Contracting the sphincter leads to tension...stop contracting it.

You aren' t practicing mulabandha rightly. its very clearly stated in hatha Yoga that if the practices aren't done properly or by a body that is not ready for it then it vitiates vata (one of the body constituents) & Constipation is clearly a vitiated vata disorder.
So go to a seasoned yoga therapist....Practice some cleansing Kriyas, a few asanas (specially padmasana) & prolonged Pranayamas, when your body sweats well in Pranayamas or it becomes effortless during Kumbhakas only then practice Mulabandha & yes Nichole is very right....its absurd to put a statment on air saying "mulabandha causes constipation for you". Now that you have posted this please make sure that when you do the rght practice & you experience the benefit of this amazing bandha...post that as well with reference to this post. |

Please keep in mind Lucas that we could not possibly "know" what you are doing, how it is effecting you, and whether you are doing it properly.
You may in fact be doing everything "correctly" and you simply have a combination of excess stress in your life and a poor diet. Sometimes a rose is just a rose - until we determine it is not a rose at all. However, in this case, if you were doing this bandha in a way leading to safety and integrity it would either be an accident or Divine intervention as you have not been instructed in the methods.
