What do I need to be aware of in a student with a steel rod at L1-2-3? He broke his back, has been through physical therapy, and wants to start taking yoga classes with me. I would appreciate any information.

Treat the student as everyone else -- highly seek feedback about what do you feel and where do you feel the reaction to all poses. Major teaching is to increase student's sensitivity to themselves. This is of prime importance as from this our intuitive sense is developed and from there we can listen to the omnipresent inner teacher. Rod in this place may tend to irritate s/I so look at other feedback on this joint in past sends. There will soon be a searchable website for all the Q & A that have been asked of me. Strengthen the gluteals mainly and do not work for flexibility in hips nor low back.
