Hello friend and welcome to the forum,
There is so much written about the chakra system that is conflicting and much of it is truly rubbish. Also, there are different traditions of chakra systems and you must use care not to mix them or you have will many pieces of the puzzle that do not fit together to give you something of value. A few of the traditions detailing very different chakra systems are the tantric system Kashmir Shaivism, Tibetian Yoga and the New Age movement (theosophical society).

My thinking and experience of study is telling me that this "3 or 4 out of seven" theory is not based in truth.

More importantly, how do you feel? Does this resonate for you? Develop your skills in perceiving and discerning that which is happening in your gross and subtle bodies. Begin with yourself.

If you do indeed feel that there are lower and higher areas of energy in your body, and that those areas are consistent and not intermittent, then my thinking goes to your breath and your directed efforts to balance and heal the pranamaya kosha as two of the best ways that you can care for yourself that are within the context of Yoga practice.

Blessings,
Nichole

I have found this web site, which pretends to "scientifically" test the chakras.

http://www.eclecticenergies.com/chakras/chakratest.php

It looks much like a psychology test, so I will not rely on it. I posted this site just to show how sacred things can be vulgarized.

I agree with Nichole and would like to recommend that before you start out reading too many views on the Chakras on the internet that you perhaps read Anodea Judith's book Eastern Body Western Mind as a good starting point. Another author you can try is Caroline Myss, she wrote a book Anatomy of the Spirit which is also a good starting point.

human beings actually have even more than 7 chakras but the main chakras are seven. for most of us all the chakras are weak or blocked, not energized. chakras are blocked by our negative emotions like greed, fear, lust, attention need, ego, discontentment, worry, jealousy. a great book that explains the chakras in great detail and how to energize them is called Guaranteed Solutions by enlightened master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. you can experience a chakra cleansing and rejuvenation workshop designed by this enlighened master. it is called LBP Life Bliss Program and available in many major cities all across USA. check out lifeblissfoundation.org

About how certain character traits and abilities relate to certain chakras, you can read here.

Let those who are able to gain benefits, do so, and let those who not, be patient.

Hi Sylvester,

I wanted to offer another perspective for you. I am a shaman trained through the Four Winds. One of the things that I really appreciated about the training was learning and "seeing" chakras with my own eyes. Here how you can do this for yourself. (it will help if you have a friend).

1 - Get an image of the chakra system so you can see where the chakras are located on the body.
2 - Lay down on your back. Have your friend (or do this for yourself) hold a pendulum (or locket on a necklace) about an inch above where the chakra is located. You will know that you have located the chakra because you will see the pendulum or pendant move in a circular pattern. (the more in touch with energy you become, the easier this process will be).

Now - how to tell if your chakra is in balance or out of balance. An out of balance chakra will spin counter-clockwise. A chakra that is in balance will spin clockwise.

Also, note that your chakras are dynamic. A thought about something that is troubling you could cause chakras to spin backwards.

Another way to think about the chakra system that has been helpful to me is that the chakras are like giant "energetic screws" that connect your energetic body to your physical body. They are funnel shaped and the pointy part of the funnel connects to the spine (central nervous system). When energy is flowing through your system well, the chakras are spinning in a clockwise direction. When energy is sluggish, chakras are spinning counter clockwise.

I know this is alot of info. I hope its helpful. For one of the best descriptions I've read on the chakra system, check out Alberto Villoldo's book, Shaman, Healer, Sage.

My own theory relating to difference in number between systems could relate to the fact that these other or additional ones are more minor chakras wheras the systems that number fewer jus list the major ones. remember that chakras are generally understood to be the points where the nadis converge and diverge. They are centres of consciousness.

The suggesstion of 3 out of 7 are usually blocked sounds like the usual new-age interpretation stuff on chakras that i tend to not take seriously-honestly sounds like the usual new-age nonsense. It usually has no basis in science or on ancient yogic texts or authentic traditional yoga systems.I don't trust it as credible source. Everyone has blockages. BUt The truth is ultimately found within yourself.

Any of these books should give you a credible summary of the chakra system.

Layayoga: The Definitive Guide to the Chakras and Kundalini by Shyam Sundar Goswami
The Serpent Power: The Secrets of Tantric and Shaktic Yoga by Arthur Avalon
Kundalini Tantra/2009 Re-print by Swami Shantanand Saraswati

I don't have the first book but i've heard it as being credible.

There was one book that sounded like new-age nonsense which i actually threw out- it sounded wishywashy to me. althoughi am free to be corrected here if i may be mistaken.

Kundalini & the Chakras: Evolution in thi... by Genevieve L. Paulson out which is this book-

This one appeared suspect- like i say ,new-age nonsense. As i say i binned it as i did/could not trust it.What the author also said about having to protect yourself about other people's draining negative energies did not resonate with me.She sounded to me like she had a few issues of her own, like un-enightened or not sympathetic enough to the plight of other people , but like i say that was just my own perception.I don't usually throw books away but this one did not resonate with me.The author did not sound very altruistic or compassionate forr the sufferings of other people and advised steering clear i believe in case one's own energies or something like that were drained. And then there wer the enrgetic map pictorials too, no reference to any of the ancient text of i reckon- It just seemed wishy washy new agey.

BTW weakness or blckages in the chakras, the subtle nervous system, the nadis, the pranayamkosha could manifest mentally, emotionally and physically,psychically,energetically- on all levels.

I do chakra work for a living and I have never heard of having 3 weak and 4 strong chakras. That really doesn't make any sense.

What I have learned is that any chakra can be out of balance, understimulated, ,balanced, or overstimulated.

I like Anna's suggestion of using a pendulum to test your chakras, however I differ in her assessment of what a balanced chakra is. A balanced chakra can rotate either clockwise or counterclockwise and actually, they shouldn't all rotate in the same direction. That is not balanced. In a balanced chakra system, the root, solar plexus, and throat will rotate counterclockwise and the sacral, heart, and third eye will rotate clockwise. The crown chakra may have differing rotations.

To tell if a chakra is out of balance, it may spin elliptically, not circular. Or it will spin very sluggishly and slowly. Or it will spin very fast. Balanced chakras will spin at a steady rhythm with all of the chakras spinning with the same steady rhythm. If you don't know someone who is adept at sensing the physical sensation of the chakras, then a pendulum is a good tool to use. But I would suggest having someone else do it, because it is very difficult to get a good reading when you do it yourself.

Namaste,
I am a reiki master and deal with energy chakras all day.
If you truly feel that you are feeling out of balance or would like to have clearer energy I would recommend finding a reiki practicioner that can help you.
In my experience one session is not enough and sometimes the client needs to not only have reiki but would benefit with chiropractic and yoga on a regular basis .
This will not only help with chakra balance but also with the sushuna and nadis
good luck
and good energy sending your way!

I am reading the Serpent Power now and Avalon does differentiate between the chakras; the three below are associated with the physical/sensate world and the 3 or 4 above ( depending on the very top of the heads's designation ) are more for the astral. I just started and i thank all posters for this post-it'll make my reading more attuned to be looking for specifics. Namaste

I can easily imagine that the physics of connection, one plane to the other, could have a ratio of 3:4 , or vice versa. I know very little about it and that helps my imagination stay open to possibilities. The integrity of each plane could offer resistance that is successively overcome by the stronger plane, which accounts for the one extra tie that binds. Of course, I have no tie that binds me to that supposition ; I'd just like to know why it should be discounted. Maybe I'll learn better from The Serpent Power, as I read it. Namaste

Agree with Nicole, that information is sometimes very controversy.
For me Chakras are just part of nervous system, concentration on them bring awareness to those centers so you get more sensitive there. Also it brings blood and activates chakras.

Generally you are sluggish in that area or have less awareness in that region.. Obviously easier to tell if they are awake than if they are asleep. Yoga is all about waking up as it is thought most folk live in a kind of dream or dream-like state.i.e They are not as awake or don't live in the present as much as they could be(conditioning of past actions, habits and so forth).

Chakras are like nodes or psycho-energetic centres of Consciousness, so the odds are you're probably none the wiser until one does wake up.I like to think of them as roundabouts that allow the traffic,i.e prana, to flow unimpeded and unobstrcuted through the nadi networks. It is sometimes i have read it alleged they spin like discs and indeed at different velocites or frequencies(i have been unable to confirm this myself although i actually thought i used to see rainbow-coloured floueorescent-type discs when i first started yoga; whther that was a purely a product of a colourful imagination i am not so sure)
Awareness can be used to expand consciousness and open up itself, amplify it's own true nature;Pull itself up by it's own bootstraps...that is part of it's inherent power.A kind of latent potential that can be tapped into. Consciousness Supreme.

You could see yoga or spirtual sciences and technolgies as a way of or providing the means for kick-starting or accelerating cosmic evolution through uinion of the small self with the big self.,the indiivdual conscouness, of course, with cosmic consciousness(supreme C.).
