Namaste

I've been doing my own self study of yoga therapy for a while now, but i'm trying to find somewhere (in India mainly) where I could do a yoga therapy training program. Has anyone out there traveled to India for additional yoga training programs?

Om Shanti

Gingerkaya: When was your last visit? I'm flying there in 7 days for the one month intensive, and have been considering returning for the therapy studies next year. I'm excited!

I am currently traveling and studying myself. After spending a month in Ladakh, my husband and I are am now in Nepal and in just a few days, heading into Tibet for 3 weeks. I have found it quite easy to arrange private study in Yoga therapeutics and Ayurveda everywhere I have been so far with local practitioners and teachers. I have prearranged an independent, non-residential study at Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram for December, but otherwise I have been able to arrange independent study as I go.

There is excellent research being published in the field of Yoga therapeutics by the Vivekananda Insitute, as gingerkaya recommended. And my own Yoga Nidra teacher, Swami Muktidharma, comes from Bihar Yoga Univeristy. There are some amazing opportunities in Rishikesh too if you prefer to stay in the mountians. There are excellent schools in Pune and Mysore too. The International Association of Yoga Therapists also gives a list of programs on their site. If you tell us what you have been including so far in your personal studies, I think we could help you narrow it down a bit because there is obviously, so very much available in India, and it runs the gambit. Whose work have already been reading and following? Are you currently a teacher?

Wishing you all the best,

Namaste. I took a teacher training program at the Tureya Ashram in Kodaikanal 2 years back after which I did a follow up training in Tantra Yoga. I would say that my experience with the program was quiet more than I had anticipated, especially since I had already completed a teacher training program in the US before I complete the Training in India.

Here are a few of the major differences that I noticed:

1) My US training was mostly concerned with the asanas where as the training I took gave just as much importance to the meditation practice and yoga nidra as it did to the asanas.

2) The environment of my training in the US was a studio off a main street in LA. While the studio was very calm and quiet, it was difficult to return to the busy LA life immediately after class. The training I took in India was primary done within a mountain forest in Southern India which gave me plenty of time to fully experience the lessons and teachings.

3) From the US I received a certificate which I eventually registered with Yoga Alliance. The degree I got from the program in India was registered with the government of India and was practically as valid as the YA certification once I returned to the US.

Other differences remain, but generally I would happy recommend finding a good teacher training program in India as you can benefit greatly from it.
