Hello! My name is Nikki, I am working on a school project for a product development class. I need to develop a line of yoga wear, and am hoping to get some input, my experience with yoga is limited so I'm hoping to gather some good opinions.
What I need to know is what type of clothing do you currently wear? Is it different if you are going to a class or practicing in your own home? Are there any changes or products that you wish to see, or would prefer?
Any ideas or thoughts would be very helpful and greatly appreciated!
THanks!

Hi, Nikki! Who is your teacher, and what is the name of your school?

I am attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, majoring in Fashion and Retail Managment. The professor I am completing this assignment for is Jennie Canning.

I wear a tank with a built in bra and yoga pants. In the summer I wear capris. Same at home as in class. I need to have form fitting clothes and I am always hot, thus the tank.

The clothes I wear for yoga that work the least are a non-stretch weave pants. When my selection is reduced to these, my range of movement is restricted and I have to tug them around to where my body will meet them once I get into the pose.
My favorite yoga instructor commented on her plaid pants once, saying the pattern was really great at calling attention to the subtle movement of body parts it takes to come into alignment, but I don't know how marketable that is.

I hope you will use the search feature in the forums; there have been threads like this from other students, and at least one thread from a guy asking about appropriate classroom wear. (lots of companies seem to focus on the female yoga population and forget that there are dudes on the mat, too.)

Hello Nikki.

The type of clothing I currently wear?
I have a myriad of shorts - some stretchy and some simple heather gray by Russell. I don't typically wear long pants to practice or teach.

The clothing I select is chosen for its functionality. Something too loose doesn't work for me and neither does something too tight. The first one is like wearing a bag and everything is all over the map. The second is too constraining.

I also prefer to wear simple, bright colors for both my practice and my teaching. I find it makes the practice lighter and more enjoyable.

Hello Nikki,

I like yoga pants that are flowy, and tops with built in bras. I prefer clothes with earthy designs like the ones from Maha Devi Designs, but that is just my personal preference in style. I find it fun, and those who see the clothes remark on the uniqueness.

Good luck with your project.

I currently wear a 100% cotton t-shirt (either orange or blue) and I love the pants (white) which the jujitsu or martial arts guys wear. I wear it both for my classes as well as home based yoga. As I build up quite a sweat during yoga I like my clothing to be super absorbent. The climate I live in (hot summers) requires that. During winter I wear a pair of track suit pants with a long sleeve lined cotton t-shirt, as our winters are not that cold I do not require much more than that.

In general I find that the branded or designer yoga stuff are too expensive and that you will get the same unbranded/undesigner stuff for half the price.
