Hello

I am starting a yoga studio and have found a space which is super except that it does not have the capacity for showers.

Please help me evaluate how important this feature is by answering the attached poll.

Namaste Solaryogi,

I belief that after yoga one is very inwardly focused and the activity in a shower room would sort of lift you out of that and I am not so sure that is where I would like to be then. Is this where you would like your yogis to be?

From an environmental pov, I am sure most people have a shower or bath at home, isn't that or shouldn't that be enough for a yogi? Lead a simple life and lighten our foot print as far as possible.

Just some thoughts to consider.

I guess it all depends on they "style" of yoga taught at your studio. The 2 locations I practice at both have shower facilities because they offer "hot yoga". However those that practice in a regular temp room would not use a shower (not that I've noticed).

Well, I actually really appreciate a shower facility. If you are practising after work and are going home afterwards, no problem. But I sometimes attend morning classes before work and I feel having a shower then is quite important for me.
As said above it depends on the style and the timings of the classes.
Good luck.

I agree with you, but if the studio is that great I don't think not having showers is going to hinder you that much. My studio doesn't have a shower and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

It's always tricky when one seeks to make money doing what one loves and sticking to the essence of the matter.

Perhaps it is better not to shower after a yoga class. But just to play the devil's advocate....is it better to take a class in the morning and shower directly afterwards so that one may go to work ? Or is it better not to attend the class at all ?

Stated differently...is compromise justified if it brings the gift to more people ? Or must we be rigid and deny granting the opportunity to as many people as would otherwise be turned on ?

Having said all these things, my surveys here and elsewhere and what I have observed attending studios myself lend me to believe that foregoing the shower option is the right choice at this time. And it always does feel good to be minimalist.

Blessings to all

This brings up the issue of saucha. It is more important for me as a teacher to come to class clean (in all definitions of the word). And there are times (like last night) where a shower is completely appropriate.

However, as a student I rarely use a shower as I can prepare for class before arriving at the studio. If I were coming from work I might want a shower. If I were practicing some very jumpy, sweaty practice, maybe. Generally speaking, from the student perspective, it's not essential.

From the teacher perspective, as long as I can wash my hands and feet I'm happy. A sink will usually do.

To teach many imperfectly.
Or to teach a few masterfully.

Your wallet would prefer the former but I would suggest the latter.
