I was watching the lion king in my class today with the kids and it is interesting how much of the movie really relates to the stuff we talk on here about. like the songs ubindi, we are one, etc... very inspirational movie and we have watched it many times before and each time I see something new. It is cool because imo the meaning of the movie is as deep as anything we discuss on here but in a very light setting
any other "yogic" movies that are entertaining to you?
thanks
Neil

Hi Neil,

I love Jungle Book, also great truths in that movie, especially the desire for man's red fire (Kundalini, shakti) by Louis the King of the Jungle. I have seen it about 20 times already and discover every time something new in it, depending on where I am at that moment.

The Matrix has always been of my favorite, Yogic mainstream movie. When I first saw Neo moves around those bullets--having each miss him--or when he could block each of Mr. Smith's blows with a simple raised hand, I thought, "Ahhh, this is sattva and equanimity done on a Hollywood budget!" Also the choice to take the red or the blue pill...man oh man! Take one and wake up and not be able to back to life as you know OR take this one and go back under. There are actually too many Yogic parallels to name from this movie. Richard Freeman just gave a studio talk on the Matrix at the Yoga Workshop; unfortunately, I missed it but I will post the link to the talk when they put it up on their site.

Highest regards,

I loved The Matrix for that very reason! I was reading Autobiography of a Yogi at the time I saw The Matrix for the first time and it really blew my mind away at how many similarities there were between the book and the movie.

Another movie that is somewhat yogic is "I Heart Huckabees". Overall I didn't like the movie a whole lot, but there were a few scenes (ex. the blanket scene) that really hit home. I think there are a lot of scenes from this moview on youtube.

"What Dreams May Come" talks about self perception and the persistance of self beyond physical death. Some parts bear up better or less well under scrutiny, but I'm certain many would disagree with me about which scenes/lines those might be.

Into the Wild: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_the_Wild_(film)

I agree with Nichole, Neo is a yogi who wakes up from mayan dream (the matrix), and obtains siddhis thanks to his tattva jnana (knowledge of matrix's software).

But, who's Smith? The ego? The beastly lower nature of ourselves?

Mixing metaphors and traditions, Smith is a demon -- a being that does everything possible to keep one from spiritual development and to lead one to destruction.

Meet Joe Black - Where in the beginning he still knows himself to be eternal (Brad Pitt plays Death in a body going on holiday to experience the world). Gradually though he forgets to recognize his true nature, falls in love, gets attached, etc. It's very funny to see his transition from seeing life as a game, to actually becoming interested in its forms. Personally I find this movie very beautiful because of the depth and poetic nature of the movie. It's mainly about love and letting go.

Love & Light,
Bentinho.

What awesome insight. Not to get off topic but I see yoga in other things to. I was watching a young figure skater and she was so in tune with her movement and flowing as one, so amazing to watch, that I looked at her and told my husband. Now that was yoga! My husband looked at me and said. No - that's figure skating.

I was given a box set of the Matrix movies years ago and haven't watched them. I'm going to watch them this weekend.

I think a lot of movies have a yogic theme to them, because nearly every character goes through a transformation to reach the end of the movie.

I watched Aladdin again the other night after a weekend yoga workshop with John Friend and saw A LOT of yoga teachings in it.

Hey, Nichole, I just stumbled upon this article about The Matrix. I found it to be good. I am sure you will like it, too.

To Katrina:

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps it is not different with truth ... once it is born in yourself, you will realize it in others.

To panoramix: the given article might lead to an answer about Agent Smith's nature. A reminder that we cannot rule out the existence of forces what actively work against our spiritual development.
