Transition from Down Dog to Lunge

This feels a little embarassing to admit, but after pracising asanas at home for about a year, I still cannot correctly transition from downward facing dog to lunge. For some reason, I have not been able to successfully get my foot forward enough without taking my hands off the mat. This seems like such a basic transition, but it troublesome for me. Is there some advise that would be helpful?

Thanks.

u made me go do 1 just 2 make sure i wasnt tripping.
i feel u r right on the edge of getting it.
keep trying : )

Have you tried getting on tiptoes before leaving downward dog? This gives you more space. Then lift your knee as high as possible, close to you chest. If you cannot lift your knee then you may need to strengthen your hip flexors (e.g. boat) or stretch your hamstrings (e.g. west side back stretch). Good luck. Yoga requires consistent and earnest practice over a long time (Patanjali I-14).

that has been discussed here and here

Thanks everyone. All of this information will be helpful. I have not tried getting on tiptoes, but I will as a first attempt. From reading all of the information provided, it looks like I need to do more improvement in various muscles, which I will work on.

I appreciate the input.

the thing my teacher said just before I ‘got it’ was, “bring your knee up in to your chest and roll everything forward.”

Thanks! Did that work for you? Sounds like it did. I’ll try that - I need to do some sessions just working on things like this.

I also had trouble with this. The key for me was focusing on really rounding my back, pulling my abs in, and pulling my knee up into my torso before swinging my foot through.

And one day it just started working better. Voila! You sound persistent and I’m sure you’ll get there!

i have a couple dvds that have group of ppl doing this transaction and if ur paying attn.
u will see a couple of them stumble a bit doing it…
